A Day in Cannon Beach

Over Memorial Day weekend we decided to drive to the coast for the day to get our ocean fix. It was a beautiful day down there so we soaked up some time playing on the beach and followed that by some lunch at Pelican Brewery (just opened!). The Oregon coast on a sunny day is really just the best.

Cannon Beach, Oregon is by far one of my favorite spots. It isn't too far from Portland and has such a great charm to it. Especially if you have kids, I highly recommend a visit.

My top recommendations:

-Hike through Ecola State Park
-If sunny, catch some rays at Indian Beach
-Grab lunch at Pelican Brewery (they just opened a new one in CB)
-Have a drink on the patio at Wayfarer 
-Grab coffee and gluten-free treats at Sea Level

Meditation: A Simple Way I've Learned to Be More Present

Although it's been around for thousands of years, meditation is definitely more embraced and understood now than ever. Which is pretty exciting.

I was first introduced to meditation back when I was studying at IIN. I remember learning about it and thinking what a great addition it would be into my daily routine. For me however, it was just an appreciation, never something I actually found time to practice. Then, it was last year that I was watching a television program where Dan Harris from ABC news was talking about his new book, "10% Happier" which was inspired by his journey into meditating. You can learn more about his story here.

After listening to his experience I was quickly motivated to read Eckhart Tolle's, "Power of Now," which I had surprisingly never read. As I began the book, I started to pay attention to two things: living in the moment (in the now) and understanding that little voice in my head. And this is where my exploration really started.

Skinny White Basil Sangria

This past week I had to whip up one of my favorite drinks to enjoy when it's warm out. There is something so satisfying about a good sangria.

While I don't count my calories by any means, I always try and be mindful of my intake. That is especially true when it comes to alcohol. I love food. A lot. And I'd rather not skimp out on a meal so I can have a calorie packed cocktail. I'd rather have a lighter beverage and a good meal. So, meet my go-to sangria style drink I like to make at home:

Skinny White Basil Sangria
yields about 5 glasses

1 bottle of organic pinot grigio (A cheaper one is great -I use Green Fin from Trader Joes)
2 cups sparkling water (lime flavored)
2 tablespoons agave
2 small green apples chopped (skin on)
1 orange chopped (skin on)
2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil

optional: diced strawberries or raspberries


In a medium size pitcher, add chopped fruit and basil.

Pour in wine and sparkling water.

Add in agave and stir well.

Let it sit in the fridge for at least an hour.

Mother's Day

I don't know about you other mama's out there, but my Mother's Day request was very specific. I'm not really one to love surprises (serial planner problems). So, my requests? Bellini's, Gluten free eggs benedict, and to plop my booty in a lawn chair and sit out in the sun, pretty much all day and read a LOT of magazines.

Seriously. I closed my eyes and asked myself what sounded incredible ( I mean, other than being on an island with a cocktail) and this is what I came up with.

Hopefully YOU are doing something nice for yourself, for your own mama or for a great mama you know (or all the above). I can truly say that it is an honor to be Parker's mama. My family is my entire world, and I have never been so full of love and joy until these two came into my life.

And a big shout out to my own mom. I'm becoming more like you every day. And while that is slightly frightening (lol), I also feel very lucky. I love you mama!
